I wasn’t sure how long I’d been asleep, but judging by the silver light shining into the cabin, the moon had to be high in the sky. I estimated it was around midnight, which meant I’d gotten an hour or two of sleep, max. My arm tingled, and I turned my head to confirm what I already assumed. Killian’s arm hung from the couch, and his fingers brushed my shoulder.

Some of the weight on my soul lightened. He was doing well enough to lie on his side. Unable to stop myself, I leaned my head into his hand and pressed my lips to his skin. Whether I liked it or not, his recovery eliminated much of the turmoil inside me.

Lips tingling, I caught my breath. If that small touch felt this good, I wondered what his mouth would feel like. My body heated…and an odd sensation of being watched crept over me.

I darted my gaze to his eyes and found them open.

I jerked back as my face caught fire. I’d been careless and gotten caught acting like a creeper.

Oh, my gods. I needed the ground to open up and swallow me now.

“Hey,” he murmured almost too low for me to hear.

There was no way in hell I could talk about this. I shook my head to warn him to drop it. I didn’t trust myself to speak, and I definitely didn’t want to chance waking Sterlyn and Griffin. I had to get out of here.

Slowly, I stood and inched toward the door, trying not to wake anyone but desperate to be alone to think. I needed to come to grips with what I’d done.

Are you okay? Sterlyn’s voice popped into my head.

Of course I’d woken her. She had better hearing than anyone else in the cabin. Yeah, I just want to go for a walk. I’m a little restless. I didn’t bother turning around, not wanting to see the look on her face.

I can go with you, she offered.

She didn’t like the thought of me out there alone. No, it’s fine. You stay there and rest. I’ll stay close by and link you if anything feels off.

Unease filtered through our bond, and she sighed. If anything seems even sort of strange, you have to tell me.

Promise. That was easy. Besides, if anyone is coming, Rosemary will let us know.

Our bond went back to its normal cadence. You’re right. But still.

I smiled despite myself. She often reminded me of Dad. I will. I opened the door and stepped outside. The chill chased away the rest of my sleepiness, and I headed to the Navigator. The three-quarter moon shone down, putting my angel magic more at peace. I lifted my head and basked in the glow for gods knew how long.

The front door opened, and I tensed. Please let it be Sterlyn. I turned to apologize, but my words fizzled as my mouth dropped open.

Killian stood there—shirtless, chiseled, and damn delectable. He didn’t look injured anymore; even his olive complexion was back to normal except for the soot that marred his skin.
